It is difficult to compress images that are of something like sand or leaves and
which contain lots of fine detail. In general, average tonal range and detail
carrying images can be compressed fairly well ... instead of highest quality
in jpeg use medium. The difference on the screen is hardly, if at all, visible
in most cases. Problem is most people want "highest" quality ... why?

This tid-bit of information as overheard during a conversation of the staff. They
may be wrong.

I get the best results by using the 700 pixel max but at higher resolution like 150 or even 300 and then use more jpg compression to get to the 100 kb area.
