I use a Western Digital external drive (320 GB) and a Lacie (500 GB). I download the photos from each session i make to both of them (via Downloader Pro), so that i have 2 copys of each raw photo. Regularly i archive to DVD (2 copys of each).

A single big drive has pretty much always been more reliable than multiple smaller drives.
