Re: UV filters for digital camera lenses

Dave,

This is an opinion and that is it. The reason for the message about UV (blocking) filters being "useless" with digital cameras is that inherently the CCD and CMOs sensors are not sensitive to UV to the same extent that silver halide based emulsions are. Films will tend to go "blue" when exposed to invisible UV while CCD's may not show an appreciable effect. I would tend to agree with this "prediction".

As for lens flare ... I am not sure why they would be the cause of flare any more than any other filter one might put in front of a camera lens. But maybe so. It is possible that with certain lenses the filter will act as a mirror and send back light reflected from the lens elements ... but this is pure speculation on my part. A good coated filter should eliminate this possibility.

things on line that said that UV filters are useless with digital cameras
and also can cause lens flare.
Does anyone have an opinion on this?
