I know a photog who's spent a few tours in Iraq. Even outside of the war
zone, he wraps his camera strap securely around his wrist. Although I
think this is more of a readiness and security practice than preventing dings
on precious. He was slinging a 1D Mark II at the time.

I don't want to imagine the expense of not having and using a shoulder strap.
Step 1: get in boat
Step 2: find dry place to put camera bag
Step 3: take cameras out of bag
Step 4: put straps around neck.
