Years ago in this list, I expressed my wish to have see a camera that
would put details in dark and highlight areas of the photograph. At that
time, someone remarked that it would make the whole picture an 18%
gray. Then I replied that that wouldn't necessarily be the result,
because you could still tweak the camera. Then another list members
wrote that oh, it would be a Windows thing! :)
Nikon D300, from reviews that I've read, has the capacity to retain
details in highlight and dark areas better than other existing cameras.

Interestingly, some of the research described is underway in a
Mitsubishi laboratory, but none of the researchers appear to be Japanese.
