Speaking from a speculation point of view,
it would seem that the motion of the sensor is confined entirely to
back and forth and/or up and down within the focusing plane.
So, if it fails, the sensor will be displaced a very short distance
from direct center where it would be in non-stabilization mode.
Thus, at worst, you'd lose a little to what would then amount to
parallax error on the edges of the image. The image circle of the
lenses would almost certainly cover this minor displacement or else
the stabilization wouldn't work.
