Bill writes re windowsupdate.62nds.com, which also works, i'll add, with Opera : : As with many things that seem to be too good to be true, there must be some hook (perhaps malevolent) somewhere; otherwise, why would they do it? Most people (who usually get take down notices issued against them) do it because they have become fed up with Microsoft. Just as Windows 98 Lite was created to strip Internet Explorer and Outlook Express from the MS shell, something MS insisted was impossible. It was also an interesting experimental excersize for the creator who prouldy shared their 'work' with the world. A lot of people out there do things out of pride, because they can, or because they're not happy with what is already available, and many are happy to share. Irfanview is a brilliant example. totally free for all - a complex little program that has attained a massive following, created simply because he could, given away free because he's a nice guy. Close to that end of the spectrum, but not as benign is the warez distributor who illegally shares cracked programs - often out of pride at being able to bypass security - their motive isn't to harm the user, though some would like to harm the original software company. At the other end are the malicious creators or distributors. some very good software is hijacked by distribution sites who benefit indirectly from distribting perfectly valid, legal programs but whos sites employ nasty methods of information gathering (or worse) to make money.. and the malicious creators are a seperate breed altogether. The company who made the popular Skype VOIP were previously notorious for the trojan riddled P2P software 'Kazaa'. it's a funny world k
