When you have an object with the light directly behind it, blocking
the light but allowing the light to form a brightness around the
object - you've got a halo. We refer to the gold rings around Jesus'
head in religious paintings as halos, also.
If you have a strong contrast between an object and its background
and oversharpen the image, you will sometimes get an exaggeration of
the edge will appear bright, like a halo. But generally you can't
see that unless you zoom in on the image and examine the pixels.
