I thought slides were more like 4.5 stops of range and you were lucky to get detail on the ends. Certainly I don't believe I ever got better than that with the low ISO slide films.

I find my digi cameras doing considerably better than that - maybe 7 or even 8 stops. But it's the capabilities of digital manipulation that open the door to an even wider range.

I have a hunch if you go to some site like dpreview you'd find firm numbers that represent the sensitivity of the various sensors and from there at least you'd have a basis for comparison.
