There are a lot of good books out there.  The very first one to study and understand though is the cameras manual. Its already paid for, and if it doesn't answer most of the basic questions, it will create questions that will steer one in later study.

After that I haven't read anything by either Scott Kelby (The  Photoshop guru) or Rick Sammon that wasn't worth the investment.  Many film books are also good for many.  Many of the principles and terms are the same. What you read often isn't as important as that you read something.  They always trigger thought and more questions to be answered.  That triggers learning.

Photography." Also, Tom Ang's "Digital Photography; An Introduction."
