The rules state that the entrant must own the copyright for any
submitted images but I don't see anything about the photographer
retaining that after submission. On the other hand, I don't see
anything stating that the photographer doesn't retain the copyright.
I guess an email to <support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> could clarify things
for anyone pondering this.

Right. That's always been my understanding.

I agree. It doesn't affect me because photo contests are not my
thing. My point in emerging from lurker status was simply to try and
clarify the difference between usage rights and copyright.
