Hard drives go bad and lose data as do CDs and DVDs. Paper lasts a long, long time if stored properly. And in the future when people laugh at you for having stored your images on optical media and teenagers have never even heard of a DVD because they're used to the new bio-media where data is stored in kelp DNA, and you've got no way of reading those disks, you still have the paper copy. And at that time (just before the apocalypse) when scanners of any kind have been banned because they may infringe upon an individual's rights, you can manually decode your image data and enter into the computer using a DOS based hex editor you get from Karl's grandson.
