interestingly, I have a few pdf's that require passwords to open them when
Acrobat attempts to open them, however when I drop the same file into the
freeware program 'Foxit pdf reader' they just open - no password prompt, no
limitations whatsoever

I suspect the password is just an Acrobat program restriction and probably
other pdf readers/editors simply ignore the password 'protection' too
