The reason smaller sensors give you more depth of field is because the magnification is lower. Image size is relatively smaller.

 

Any focal length lens at 1:1 magnification will give you the same depth of field.

this is because smaller sensors use shorter focal lengths (with deeper
depth of field) to achieve the same angle of view as larger formats with
longer focal lengths.

..or take it one step further and go for a larger format again on film - 66
or even 4x5 for an even shallower DOF :-)
