Steve Bowen's question is a typical one from someone new into the field, searching for justification of what has been discussed since the inception of photography as the pictures fall into comparison with painting.

The fact about film, as with theater arts, especially movies; these are not fine art but plastic arts. The art of the craft and information within are creations and manipulations entirely dependent on people. Maluable in every aspect. The craft therefore sometimes can overwhelm the creativity, as can the creative use of the craft.

There is no real answer. This is a question that demands discussion. Endless discussion.
