Ok I'm confused, I thought by view finder they meant the little window in the back that you look through the lens with, so which is it for sure the little window or the big window where you can review the photos.
By the way I use my big window all the time to evaluate the exposure on my photos, it has served me well, I use Canon cameras.

The Canon 10D viewfinder is adjustable for brightness from way too bright, to a lot too bright, to just too bright. It cannot be relied on for visual examination of accurate exposure.

However, the histogram tells the real story and should be trusted every time.

The D100 viewfinder seemed more accurate as I recall.

No experience with the D70.
