Leslie, My guess is that a FM2 or even an FM10 will perform best as backups (all mechanical, no batteries, rugged, manual focus though)

The D70 is a fine camera but I'd want more weatherproofing.  I understand
the budget issues are holding you back but if my butt were on the line and I
was in a place like the Amazon where batteries and support were hard to get
I'd bring a film backup body just in case.
