> *Name aspects of painting (drawing, sculpting, etc.) that are in common > with > photography. Marilyn, my "fiance" is an artist...painting and mixed media. She'll be attending the Vermont Studio Center later this year, on a grant. I photographed some of her work (medium format with Bronica S2, and slides with Nikon F2) to use for submissions for the grant application. She has since helped me mat some of my photos for an upcoming show. As we discussed my photography and her work, we came to realize that one of the shared aspects was the notion of "seeing." She "sees" an image in much the same way as I "see" an image; the difference lies in the medium by which the image is realized. She has the necessary hand/eye skills to translate her vision into a painting or sculpture. She does not have the necessary skill set, or talent set, to look through a viewfinder, "see" something, compose, and shoot. (Her adventures with a digital camera are sometimes hilarious, but very frustrating to her! God forbid she should try film! My adventures with a set of pastels and a sketch book are .....you get the idea!) I, on the other hand, have the ability, sometimes, to envision an "image," knowing what it might look like in B&W, cropped a certain way, exposed a certain way, printed a certain way, etc. I have learned a set of skills involving cameras, lenses, films and filters and speeds, etc., just as she has learned a set of skills necessary for the production of her art. To cut this short: The shared aspect is the "vision" we both have of something that will, in some way, come to be an individual expression of our relationship to our world and ourselves. Thanks for provoking thought. Ken Frazier
