Not at all. There are, of course, plenty of limitations, as with any 
medium, but excessive contrast is not one of them.

It's probably not the sensor that is at fault but the internal way some "consumer" compacts handle the shots.  Bit like the over-zealous use of "auto-levels" in photoshop (excessive clipping) linked to in-built (hence unavoidable) excessive use of sharpening. It's a way of making badly focussed / badly exposed shots look acceptable for the masses - 

With a "*proper*" digital camera - high end SLR - there is no reason for the user to be forced to accept excessive contrast.
