For instance, by default the file extensions are hidden from the user. Why is that? They didn't be so in earlier versions of windows: it was a policy decision. To dumb down user requirements - and to make users ever more reliant on what they are spoon fed. "Click and Hope" is the corporate buy-word. As to semantics: it wasn't me that said "only jpegs are safe". All files are safe - seriously. have no worries at all about opening any com, exe, vbs or whatever file on my windows system. I just make sure I open them in either Notepad (to view as text) or Frhed (to view as hex)! The point about safe computing - save attachments to disk then open them from within the program you think is appropriate (PS for jpeg/gif, notepad for txt etc) is that you get round all the security loopholes.
