None of that matters in any way. You use the zoom lens to crop what
you're seeing through the viewfinder, wherever it looks best to you
without reference to any markings on the lens. Then auto metering
will figure out the way to set the aperture and exposure time
according to whichever mode you set the camera in. It doesn't care a
hoot about any markings on the lens.
i suppose it's nice of Nikon to put markings on the lens for
approximately where 35, 50 and 80 are, but they have nothing to do
with the way you use the lens. You use the lens continuously,
wherever you like the crop.
