you can also make a new layer on top of the one you are using, that is the exact color you like or wish...then you can play with the opacity and blending mode.
i also use anothe approach. i play with the fill slider, and them merged the 2 layers, then go to the minus eydroer in curvers or level and click in the area i want to make white...you get different results with different fill settings though...
then there is the sepia routine in the samples directory of PS (drop the file on the sepia exe) and then there is a search in the various spS sites for yet another method

a bit mind biggling i assure you...Kostas
