OK I take back my entries of Muybridge and William Gates Jr.
Muybridge for the first time did split second photographs of the horses in
motion for Stanford. And, Gates only projects his wealth, not films. :-) so
both answers are not true.
A simple google search found Lumiere to be most accepted answer (Workers
leaving the factory).
It reminds me that I have a 15 seconds videoclip from this first film (from
a documentary on PBS) which my 2 yr. son overwrote on his Barney cassette;
so, I get to see this clip everyday at least 20 times.
