Telling Stories With Photos

On the topic of telling stories with photos, I have created the "imagenovel" in which photographs are an essential part of the narrative scheme. I thought for a while I was the first with the concept, but I learned after I finished Book I of my Vittoria's Island trilogy that back in the 1940s a chap by the name of Wright Morris produced several unique works of fiction, which he called "photo-texts," among them "The Inhabitants" (1946), "The Home Place" (1948), and "God's Country and My People, (1968). In these the image and the word "cohabitate in a manner of mutual and complex exchange," according to a review of the time.

I leaned about Wright Morris--you guessed it--from a photo historian right here on Photofourm!

<< Not at all. A photojournalist tells a story with photos. A newspaper
 photographer illustrates newspaper articles.

Actually, sometimes newspaper photographers also tell stories with their
photos. David Leeson, Cheryl Diaz Meyer, and Mona Reeder are certainly more of
photojournalists than typical newspaper photographers. Also, newspaper
photographers do get to do special series stories. For example, one of the ladies that I
work with is doing a one year series on the Egyptian conjoined twins. Dallas
Morning News just devoted an entire section of the newspaper to this series
and her photos definitely told a story. The DMN also one the Pulitzer for it's
series on domestic abuse (I think that's what is what) but it was done on an
international level. These photos definitely told a story. There is another
example of Mona Reader's work in Afghanistan. So, I guess you can say that some of
what they do is definitely photojournalism. On most of these stories,
however, the pj's rarely used flash.
