Surely out of all the digital camera users on this list someone has experience with shooting digital in weather so cold your hands ache after 5 minutes without mittens. I would imagine the batteries would be as susceptible to draining as anything else and I'm wondering how well a microdrive or a memory stick holds up. How about the LCD viewing panels?

Greg,
On my road trip I've experienced the conditions you speak of.  I kept the digital camera close to my vest.  Or, maybe under my vest would be a better description.  I took it out only long enough to shoot and then tucked it away again.

For my Mamiya 7 I bought a remote battery cable so I could shoot in extreme cold while keeping the battery warm.  Perhaps there is such a gizmo for your digicam.

A Microdrive might be a problem as they have moving parts.  Solid state cards/sticks shouldn't be much of a problem.  I don't know about the LCD screen, but if it is a problem it can always be turned off or ignored.  One of those chemical hand-warmer packs might come in handy.
