It does. The knowledge and the controversy become a conceptual caption to the image, altering how we perceive it.

Nicely put - but still, it's only the individual perception and not the image itself that's changed. That's where I find the problem. I find Doisneau's own criticism mentioned here that it's an 'image pute' to be far more telling - as if he's written it off as merely commercial. Rather arrogant to be so dismissive of one's best known and most profitable work and those that bought it.
And on the question of model releases, I don't remember that he had any problem with the non-professional participants - the rather bemused middle aged woman and the oblivious gentleman in the beret. Perhaps it was a much less litigious world then. (Perhaps?!)
