Rose, "Thumbprinting" is usally making an easily seen mark on the lower left corner of a slidemount (when looking at the image 'right way up' on a light table) for correct orientation and 'emulsion toward the projector lens' when inserted in a slide tray. This allows for that "mark" (often a dot about1/8 to 3/16 inch) to be visible and readly seen when the slides are inserted in a slide tray.
