Rose,

"Thumbprinting" is usally making an easily seen  mark on the lower left
corner of a slidemount (when looking at the image 'right way up' on a light
table) for correct orientation and 'emulsion toward the projector lens'
when inserted in a slide tray.

This allows for that "mark" (often a dot about1/8 to 3/16 inch) to be
visible and readly seen when the slides are inserted in a slide tray. You
may note that most slide trays have a "dip" at the "outside" corner that is
large and visible enough for someone sitting behind the projector to see
your orientation marks on all the slides to ensure that they will all be
seen by the audience in the correct manner.
