This could be the case if 1) You are running Mac OS X which is based on Unix systems unlike the previous Mac OS 8 or 9 which were specific to Macs and whose internal code wasn't known. 2) or you were running MS Office for Mac : some virus uses Offices Macro. The use of the new X system makes Macs more vulnerable.
