  It depends. The best quality you can afford is a good idea. For 
some uses, compact size/light weight matters (as in travel).
For most "available light" uses, even f/2.8 is pretty slow.

   Not a "prime nut", but for many uses, primes rule. One-touch,
vs. 2-touch, having a tripod socket on heavier zooms...quality....
and a focal range that suits your intended use. Make sure you get 
the OEM shade for it.
