AA talks about uncoated lenses in one of his books, how they
(via flare acting as a preflash of sorts) falsely raise the values in
the shadows, lowering contrast by one paper grade. He
comments on Strand noticing this, and one filmmaker of the day.
Of course, later he did use coated lenses.
