Register the image, as well as a bundle of others, with the Copyright Office today (one big $30 fee for as many jpegs as you can fit on a CD, or as many pages of slides as you wish to include). Please go to editorial photo for all the basic info you need to cover your ass. You never "sell a photo", unless you're selling a single print of a photo in a gallery. You license usage of an image which you hold and retain the complete right to permit copying. Permission to exercise your license is often contingent upon payment in advance. For advertising you would do well to have releases from any people in the image, even not clearly identifiable. Good luck.
