You could pass arrays containing the selected rows between functions.
Something like:

CREATE TYPE basket_row AS(id integer, name text, count integer, ...);
CREATE FUNCTION sell (items basket_row[]) RETURNS boolean LANGUAGE plpgsql
   AS $$........$$;
