Most newsreaders, not just Thunderbird, use the posts' headers to support the "threading" feature - whether or not that's obvious to one as a new user notwithstanding. It is what it is.

It won't be obvious to the newcomer what the problem is until someone lets them know. It would be unfortunate if that newcomer were to take such education as a "scolding" and take offense.
