i wouldn't call it a bug to need more resources than you've got available :-) obviously the limits on the i386 version of FreeBSD are less than that on the amd64 version, but I've not got any "big" i386 machines (ie, more than 1Gb of RAM) to compare. All my big boxes are amd64.
