It works for me:

As user "postgres":

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION tellme() RETURNS text LANGUAGE plpgsql
   SECURITY DEFINER AS 'BEGIN RETURN session_user; END;';

As user "laurenz":

SELECT tellme();
 tellme  
---------
 laurenz
(1 row)
