Can you explain what you mean by 'fee bit'?

Also not sure why you need to deal with compressed bits, cannot you not just pull or push a string from/into the field?

    You are going to need to be more specific:

    1) What version of Postgres?

    2) What is the field type?

    3) Are you referring to the TOAST table?
