to use PostgreSQL 9.6 on CentOS 7 -
first delete the postgresql packages coming with CentOS 7 by using "yum erase ...." command and then:
rpm -Uvh https://download.postgresql.org/pub/repos/yum/9.6/redhat/rhel-7-x86_64/pgdg-centos96-9.6-3.noarch.rpm
