problems with debian testing install or documentation

tried to follow instructions from postgresql.org/download/linux/debian

1) choice for debian versions wheezy and sid - not for testing (jessie)

2) no mention if any portions of old version should be removed

3) since I'm working on a dev machine, went ahead and removed everything - there are no instructions on what to remove but went ahead and removed: postgresql-9.2 postgres-common-9.2 postgresql-client-9.2 postgresql-contrib-9.2postgresql-server-dev-9.2 postgresql postgresql-common postgres-client postgresql-contrib postgres-server-dev
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/postgresql
sudo rm -rf /var/log/postgresql
sudo rm -rf /etc/postgresql

2) went ahead and installed:
sudo apt-get install postgresql-9.3
sudo apt-get install postgresql-common-9.3
sudo apt-get install postgresql-client-9.3
sudo apt-get install postgresql-contrib-9.3
sudo apt-get install postgresql-server-dev-9.3

3) did get message stating that cluster was removed and need new one

4) su - postgres
> password --> submitted old one, worked
$ psql

psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"?

tried to start server: sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql

sudo] password for postgres: xxxxxx
postgres is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

5) checked wiki.debian.org/postgresql - no help

any ideas ?
