      I would like to make  Postgresql 8.4 as main database for

    It's certainly possible. Obviously it will need a bigger machine
    than you would use for just one of the databases.

    
    Bear in mind that you can't have cross-database queries without
    using something like the dblink package. I don't know if that
    affects your "exchanging data".

    
    Oh - and unless you really have no choice in the matter, use 9.1
    rather than 8.4 - you will get better performance, new features and
    it will be supported for longer.
