lock file permisson

when i start postgresql using
/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start
I am getting this error
IST FATAL:  could not create lock file "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432.lock": Permission denied

I changed ownership of /var/run/postgresql using
chown postgres /var/run/postgresql
