There's been discussion of a couple of different patches on pgsql-hackers in the past few months --- see the archives if you want details. AFAICT there's not yet consensus on which way to proceed. So while it's possible there will be something of the sort in 9.1, I wouldn't bet on it. As was mentioned, there's nothing stopping you from storing JSON stuff as text right now.
