Aren't my requirements sufficiently common to justify developing a mechanism to report progress back to client applications during batch operations and the like? This seems like a nice thing to have, that would be broadly useful, perhaps as a contrib module. Obviously I have no idea of the amount of effort developing such a feature would entail.
