Hi Tom,

Postgres is 8.2.3.

The owners of this database have now decided to rebuild it from scratch so please don't spend much more time on answering this. Although, I'd like to know how to proceed in cases like this in case it ever happens again.

What PG version is this exactly?

It's probably a read-past-EOF case.
