My company, Instructure, is looking to hire a full-time DBA on our DBA team. Over the last decade, our Canvas product has grown from nothing to being the standard LMS solution around the world, helping millions of people with online learning every day. But we're still growing, and that's where you come in. We're looking for an engineer who loves to keep data safe and available, knows how to future-proof a database system without being wasteful, appreciates the need of keeping processes sustainable, and loves consulting with fellow employees to maximize their success. We need somebody who can: • Explain why databases are one of the most difficult layers of the stack to work with, and how to overcome their special challenges. • Comfortably work in a SQL prompt on production systems. • Own projects and drive them to completion • Have the customer focus to seek out what needs doing, then collaborate to get it done • Have the knowledge to know how to respond to database problems at 3am • Be able to automate stuff so that there aren't database problems at 3am • Be a point of contact for questions, both from technical engineers and less technical members of the company • Be on top of problems before they become problems • Be part of an on-call team The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge with: • Linux • Amazon Web Services • PostgreSQL, or some other ACID-compliant SQL database • pgBouncer, or some other form of database pooling • Ansible, or some other form of config management • Datadog, or some other form of resource monitoring and alerting • Automation • Fleets of thousands of servers • Ruby, bash, git, Python, Go, etc. • Performance turning • Learning The New Shiny, with no need to remake what isn't broken Some of what we offer: • Competitive pay to work on technologies you love with the tools of your choice. • Your efforts go towards helping millions of people learn, every day, all around the world, not invading privacy or selling widgets nobody needs. • A relaxed work environment. Instructure engineering is a remote-first organization, so as long as you have a healthy overlap in working hours with US timezones, the world is your oyster. But we do have our headquarters in Salt Lake City in case you pine for the days of well-stocked break rooms and collaborative open floor plans. If not, well, we also provide a stipend to help you set up the perfect home office. We are not looking to sponsor US work visas, and strong English skills are a hard requirement.
