Our client is seeking an experienced PostgreSQL Database Engineer for a 6 month contract (w2 only) position in San Francisco, CA, to work in a complex and dynamic database environment. We are looking to add to a team that is laying the groundwork for their services to scale in an efficient and reliable way.

The PostgreSQL DBA is responsible for architecting and operating the PostgreSQL database clusters. You will work with other DBAs, Site Reliability Engineers, and Product Engineers to investigate problems, implement solutions, achieve efficiency gains, and automate repetitive tasks. You will have a strong work ethic, the ability to keep complex tasks organized, and an amazing attention to detail. You will get a chance to work on various database technologies like MySQL, PostgreSQL and Vertica on a company with over 300M monthly active users.

Responsibilities:

  • Use your PostgreSQL expertise to tune and push our databases beyond their normal limits
  • Work closely with engineering teams to design, build, and maintain systems and help them decide on database to use, schema design and query tuning
  • Troubleshoot issues across the entire stack - hardware, software, application and network
  • Automate repetitive tasks until you feel you are not needed.

Required Skills:

  • Deep understanding of PostgreSQL (MySQL and Vertica is a plus)
  • Solid experience in systems administration and expert in automation
  • Strong command of scripting and/or programming language, preferably Python.
  • Ability to collaborate, quickly learn and share ideas with other teams.

Highly Desired Skills:

  • Experience debugging, tuning or modifying database internals and desire to contribute to the community
  • Experience at a large-scale and world-class internet or mobile site
