Sr DBA for our San Francisco or Chicago office

I’m looking for a good DBA, preferably with strong Postgresql, but solid experience in other RDBMS and desire to learn Postgresql may be a good substitute.

The position is a production Sr DBA with operational as well as development responsibilities. Strong skills in AWS are desirable.

Below is the job description. Please note that it is not a purely Postgres position.  We also use Redshift, DynamoDB, and very little MySQL.

We are growing our database operations team and looking for a Database Administrator to manage, optimize, and scale multiple database instances within our infrastructure. You should have experience planning and configuring production databases for mid and large-scale enterprise systems.  You must be passionate about automation, testing, and ensuring the quality and timely delivery of your work. This position requires regular on-site interaction with the engineering team in our Chicago and San Francisco offices.    

The position involves managing Postgresql, Redshift, and some MySQL and DynamoDB databases in a datacenter and cloud. Eventually the responsibilities may  extends to managing other SQL and NoSQL based solutions.

Key Accountabilities:

• Application support - execute database changes as requested by the Engineering or Customer Success organizations, participate in release and maintenance events, respond for pages triggered by monitoring
• Planning and configuration - pro-actively manage database instances to accommodate for growth and scale
• System Optimization - monitor and optimize system performance, schema change management, query analysis, authoring tools for databases automated deployment and management
• Availability - proactively ensure maximum uptime and implement proper safeguards for backup, replication, and recovery
• Security - define and implement user privileges and data access controls
• Leadership - make suggestions on optimizing the database architecture and database related processes, creating and documenting best database practices, knowledge sharing with other DBAs
• Evangelism - help engineers efficiently utilize the database using best practices
• Documenting daily operational processes

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• Demonstrable senior level experience managing Postgres, Oracle or MySQL
• Experience with high throughput databases 1TB+ in size
• Solid experience with shell in addition to Ruby or Python, SQL query writing and strong database performance optimization skills
• Solid experience with Unix environments, understanding of Unix performance and system capacity metrics, Unix and I/O system configuration for the best performance, understanding of networking
• Strong attention to detail, good communications skills, and a positive attitude
• Self motivation and delivering projects on time with minimal or no  supervision
• Ability to learn quickly
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Postgresql replication solutions, trigger based and streaming
• Amazon AWS: Ec2, S3, CloudFormation, Redshift
• Puppet, git
• Experience with MySQL, AWS RDS, DynamoDB, AWS EMR, Redshift.
