Hi all,
Please see the below job posting - we look forward to hearing from you!
#About the company:
Packt Publishing is one of the most prolific publishers of ICT learning materials in the world, with over 2000 books published since 2004. We pride ourselves on covering the whole spectrum of software development in a practical, hands-on manner. We are heavily committed to open-source technology, and all books based on open-source technology see a portion of the revenue donated to the project.
We have published a number of highly regarded titles on PostgreSQL.
#Job position:
Authors
#Job Description:
Packt is looking to publish a wide range of titles on PostgreSQL which will provide learning materials for all potential levels of experience and covering topics of interest to the PostgreSQL community. For this, we are looking for experienced users of PostgreSQL to work with us on authoring these books. You'd be writing as a solo author, or perhaps as part of a team to produce a top-quality book which the PostgreSQL community will come to regard as a key source of learning for the software. The books in question will be directed at both beginners and more experienced PostgreSQL users. We want to look at various use case scenarios such as its use by developers versus administrators, as well as some specific subtopics.
#Writing with Packt - the process:
1) Initial Outline - with your editor you develop a breakdown of all the chapters you think the book would need to meet the project brief. We can supply you with plenty of information you can use to help with this if you've never authored before.
2) Chapter 1 - The first chapter is often the hardest. You'll work closely with your acquisition editor to get into the swing of writing, and deliver a complete preliminary draft.
3) Chapter 2 - We introduce the Content Development Editor. They are responsible for making your book the best it can be, while your Acquisition remains project lead.
4) Development - The author continues to work with their editorial team to write a complete set of preliminary drafts. As they are accepted, we send them to be reviewed by members of the community.
5) Final drafts - Once you've finished preliminaries, you should have a set of reviews of a number of chapters. You then make changes as necessary until you and Packt are happy they address reviewer concerns.
6) Proof-reading, copy editing - All books need close proof-reading and copy-editing. All books are proof-read by in-house, native English speakers.
7) Final production - Indexing, layouts, covers, file formats, and everything that is needed to complete the book ready for sale.
#Pre-requisites:
You'll be experience in using PostgreSQL, with at least a year's experience of using it in a professional environment. This is highly variable however, and some titles we are looking into may require greater experience.
#Payment:
- Packt offers an advance against royalties, to be discussed on a title-by-title basis. It is paid on key-milestones throughout the writing process.
- Our royalty rate is one of the most competitive in the technology publishing market, at 16% on all revenue. Please see the following link for more information on our royalty rate: http://authors.packtpub.com/royalties
#Instructions on how to apply:
Please email lukep@xxxxxxxxxxxx if you are interested.
Include a little information about your background, including your experience with PostgreSQL, and preferably some evidence of published written material. Links to any social media profiles and open source contributions you feel are relevant would also be useful.
