Senior Performance Engineer, Cloud Database Query Optimizer

Be a part of the high powered engineering team that is trusted with the performance and scalability of the world’s most advanced enterprise cloud architecture.  We’re operating at a scale unknown at most companies, with ~1E+5  organizations collocating data in tables with billions of rows.   This is a superb big data challenge.  As salesforce.com moves into the era of billions of transactions per day, pushing the limits of our performance and scalability has never been more important, and the evolution of the query optimizer at the heart of our multi-tenant architecture is right at the center of the action. The salesforce.com Performance Engineering Team is seeking an outstanding engineer to partner with our Core Optimizer Team to deliver the advances we need to sustain the tremendous growth we have seen in our transaction and data volumes.  This high-impact role is all about advanced query performance analysis and delivering massive leverage through sophisticated automation.


Experience/Skills Required

  • Knowledge of database fundamentals, SQL programming, schema design, query optimization, DB performance analysis (Oracle preferred but not required)
  • Strong software development skills (Java preferred)
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of Linux operating system, esp. process and system monitoring facilities
  • Effective and fearless when debugging complex distributed deployments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills


Experience/Skills Desired

  • Oracle-specific performance analysis and tuning techniques (e.g. Explain Plans, Traces, AWR, etc.)
  • Experience developing automation tools and frameworks for performance measurement and analysis
  • Familiarity with report generation concepts and algorithms (joins, merging, sorting, filtering, aggregation, etc.)
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and experimental design techniques
  • HBase application development
  • MapReduce / Hadoop programming for data analysis
  • Ruby
  • PostgreSQL administration and performance tuning
  • Force.com platform development experience
