On my system, the data folder appears on the command line. You could query it using ps :# ps -o cmd= -C postgres
/usr/local/postgresql-8.4.7/
postgres: writer process
postgres: wal writer process
/usr/local/postgresql-8.4.7/
postgres: writer process
postgres: wal writer process
postgres: autovacuum launcher process
postgres: stats collector process
