Everytime I run 8.1 my server average load mostly below 10.
Everytime I run 9.3 my server average load is about 30.

# -----------------------------
# PostgreSQL configuration file
# -----------------------------
#
# This file consists of lines of the form:
#
# name = value
#
# (The '=' is optional.) White space may be used. Comments are introduced
# with '#' anywhere on a line. The complete list of option names and
# allowed values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation. The
# commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values.
#
# Please note that re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it
# to the default value, unless you restart the postmaster.
#
# Any option can also be given as a command line switch to the
# postmaster, e.g. 'postmaster -c log_connections=on'. Some options
# can be changed at run-time with the 'SET' SQL command.
#
# This file is read on postmaster startup and when the postmaster
# receives a SIGHUP. If you edit the file on a running system, you have
# to SIGHUP the postmaster for the changes to take effect, or use
# "pg_ctl reload". Some settings, such as listen_addresses, require
# a postmaster shutdown and restart to take effect.

# (The "=" is optional.) Whitespace may be used. Comments are introduced with
# "#" anywhere on a line. The complete list of parameter names and allowed
# values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation.

# The commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values.
# Re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it to the default value;
# you need to reload the server.
#
# This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a SIGHUP
# signal. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the
# server for the changes to take effect, or use "pg_ctl reload". Some
# parameters, which are marked below, require a server shutdown and restart to
# take effect.
#
# Any parameter can also be given as a command-line option to the server, e.g.,
# "postgres -c log_connections=on". Some parameters can be changed at run time

Here are the parameters I used to compile 8.1

# -----------------------------
# PostgreSQL configuration file
# -----------------------------
#
# This file consists of lines of the form:
#
# name = value
#
# (The "=" is optional.) Whitespace may be used. Comments are introduced with
# "#" anywhere on a line. The complete list of parameter names and allowed
# values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation.
#
# The commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values.
# Re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it to the default value;
Some parameters can be changed at run time
# with the "SET" SQL command.
#
# Memory units: kB = kilobytes Time units: ms = milliseconds

------------------------------ End of 9.3 configuration ------------------

Here are the parameters I used to compile 8.1

./configure --prefix=/usr/contrib/pgsql.correct --infodir=/usr/share/info --
mandir=/usr/share/man --enable-debug --enable-depend --enable-cassert --enable-t
hread-safety --with-perl --with-python --with-openssl --without-readline --with-
zlib --with-gnu-ld

And for 9.3

./configure --prefix=/usr/contrib/pgsql93 --infodir=/usr/share/info --mandir
=/usr/share/man --enable-debug --enable-depend --enable-cassert --enable-thread-
safety --with-perl --with-python --with-openssl --without-readline --with-zlib -
-with-gnu-ld --with-template=freebsd

Any clue to the runaway performance?
